men slain were brothers Kenneth and Paul Corbally, aged 32 and 35. Their murder brought the number of gun homicides in Ireland to 15

Posted On 12:16 0 comments

Two gangland figures are sitting in a Lexus car in a suburban street on a summer evening. Their automobile is rammed from behind by a stolen Audi 6. Two masked men jump out and open fire on the Lexus with semi-automatic handguns, killing the men instantly.

The assassins drive to a deserted street a mile away, douse the car with gas, set it alight and escape. This professional hit — the killers are said to have received 40,000 euros ($50,000) each to “whack” the victims — took place in the Clondalkin suburb of Dublin on June 28.

The men slain were brothers Kenneth and Paul Corbally, aged 32 and 35. Their murder brought the number of gun homicides in Ireland to 15 since the start of the year.

The impunity with which their executioners acted underlined the fact that gun crime in Ireland — a country of just over 4 million people where possession of handguns is severely restricted — is rising fast and is practically out of control.

shot in broad daylight on Saturday afternoon on Sound View Road in Sandys

The Royal Gazette: "30-year-old Paget man was shot in broad daylight on Saturday afternoon on Sound View Road in Sandys.
The incident, which happened only yards from where neighbourhood children play, left many area residents shaken up.
The shooting victim, who has not been named, was shot in the leg. He was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and released later that day. Neighbours say they were going about their normal routines when three gun shots rang out shortly after 2 p.m. Police were on the scene within minutes and had cordoned off the area, near Somerset Road, to search for gun shells left behind.
The incident marks a wave of gun crime to hit the West End. The Royal Gazette spoke to residents in the area shortly after the shooting. Many appeared to be in shock. One said: 'It is just so scary, right on the corner as well. We have tenants and both of them have little children and it makes you not want to go outside.
'I can't believe it, it is just gone from bad to worse. The fact that at broad daylight people are shooting off guns it is just out of control. This last year has been so violent in Bermuda. And I feel so sorry for the Police as well because they have a hard ride ahead of them with these young people.'
Another resident said she was 'really bothered' and 'uncomfortable' by the incident being so close to home.
She said it was near to where Gary (Fingaz) Cann, 22, was murdered in December of last year, but said this was even more shocking because it was in the middle of the day."

A masked man is thought to have fired several shots into his torso and head at the Corn Store animal feed warehouse at Grove Industrial Estate, Dubber Lane, Finglas, at around 12.10pm.

Owens, a father-of-one with no criminal convictions, was working at the time."

Stephen "Madser" Byrne, 32, is thought to have been related to two other men who have been murdered as part of the vicious feud.

Stephen "Madser" Byrne, 32, is thought to have been related to two other men who have been murdered as part of the vicious feud. Gardaí suspect Stephen Byrne was killed in a revenge attack for another murder.

It’s not the first tragedy to hit Stephen Byrne’s family. His brother, David Byrne, 26, was fatally assaulted in Mountjoy Prison in June 2009 in a non-feud related attack. It brings to 18 the number of fatal shootings this year, up to 14 of which are considered by gardaí to be gangland murders.

The feud erupted some six years ago when Christy Griffin, the leader of a major criminal gang, was accused of abusing his partner’s daughter. The abuse split the gang, with rival blocks turning on each other.

Griffin, of Canon Lillis Avenue, in the north inner city, was eventually convicted in 2007 of rape and given a life sentence, which he appealed unsuccessfully .

Stephen Byrne was shot on a street corner, not far from his home on Sheriff Street in the north inner city just, before 5pm. He was shot twice, once in the head and chest. He was taken to the nearby Mater Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at around 5.30pm.

Gardaí suspect a lone gunman was involved, with unconfirmed reports that he may have escaped on a bicycle. A second individual may also have been involved as a scout. The area was immediately sealed off, pending a forensic and ballistic examination. The State Pathologist’s Office was also informed.

Garda sources said they had warned the victim his life was in danger, particularly following the murder of Stephen Ledden in 2006, for which Stephen Byrne was a suspect. Detectives suspect his death may have been in retaliation for that.

"He was regarded as a dead man walking after that. He had been warned by us," said a garda source.

Stephen Byrne was associated with the gang feuding with the Griffin block and was known by gardaí to be involved in serious crime, including armed robbery and firearms offences.

The feud has escalated this year, with the latest murder coming less than six months after the shooting dead of Aiden Byrne. The 33-year-old, from St Mary’s Mansions flats complex in the north inner city, was shot dead at Drumalee Avenue, off North Circular Road, on February 20. Stephen Byrne is thought to have been related to him.

Stephen Byrne was a first cousin to the first murder victim of the feud: that of Gerard "Batt" Byrne, 25, who was shot dead near the IFSC on December 13 2006. Two weeks after that murder, on December 27, in a revenge attack, Ledden, 28, was shot dead in a house of Oriel Street, in the north inner city.

The next murder came in April 18, 2008, when Anthony Russell, an associate of Griffin’s was shot dead in a pub in Artane, north Dublin. The 30-year-old was suspected of involvement in the Gerard Byrne murder.

Shotgun and Standover

Painters and Dockers's brutal history is laid bare in a new book co-authored by journalist Russell Robinson.

What was the impetus for writing a book about criminal history of the Painters and Dockers?

The motivation for writing Shotgun and Standover was that, previously, only parts of the criminal history of the Painters and Dockers union had ever been told, and no one had really put the whole story together.

Co-author James Morton and I were intrigued by the death notices and tributes placed by old painters and dockers and their wives and families whenever a recent or current gangster or organised crime identity was eliminated.

Of course other journalists have written about the connections, but James and I wanted to complete the circle of violence and criminality linking the old painters and dockers, even going back to the 1920s, with the Underbelly identities of today.

GARDAÍ INVESTIGATING the shooting dead of Dublin criminal Stephen Byrne have arrested a boy aged 16

GARDAÍ INVESTIGATING the shooting dead of Dublin criminal Stephen Byrne have arrested a boy aged 16. His arrest follows the questioning of two other people, one of whom is a 15-year-old boy.

The 16-year-old was arrested at 2pm yesterday in Dublin’s north inner-city. He was detained under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act and is being questioned at Store Street Garda station. He can be held for 72 hours without charge.

Gardaí believe the boy was one of a number of people who were talking to Byrne when he was shot dead at about 4.40pm on Tuesday at the junction of St Laurence Place East and Sheriff Street in Dublin’s north inner-city.

Byrne (32), a convicted criminal, lived at Mariner’s Port, just yards from where he was killed. He received a phone call while in his house and went out to meet somebody on the street. As he was talking to a group of people, a gunman approached on a mountain bike, shooting Byrne in the head and chest.

Those talking to Byrne fled as the gunman moved in. The killer, who used a handgun, escaped on his bike. The 16-year-old arrested yesterday was one of the group talking to Byrne just seconds before the shooting occurred.

The 15-year-old and a man in his 20s arrested on Tuesday night have been released without charge. Both were also among the group talking to Byrne.

The 15-year-old was detained for two nights but freed yesterday. All three arrested people are from the Sheriff Street area.

Gardaí believe Byrne was killed as part of a gangland feud between rival factions around Sheriff Street that has cost five lives since 2006.

Byrne was a suspect for one of the earlier killings, that of Stephen Ledden (28), who was shot in a case of mistaken identity in December 2006.

Two of the other victims of the feud were cousins of Byrne. Gerard Batt Byrne (25) was shot in 2006 while Aiden Byrne (32) was shot in February.

The factions were once all members of the same gang. It split when its former leader was accused, and later convicted, of raping a woman over a sustained period from when she was a child.

Mafia wars heat up in Netanya: "stun grenade was thrown at the Bat Haikar restaurant, owned by the Abutbul crime family, in Netanya Saturday night, lightly shocking a woman in the area. The attack came a day after arsonists burned down three separate locations of the restaurant chain.

Three separate locations of the Bat Haikar chain, all owned by prominent underworld figure Francois Abutbul, were burned Friday night.

The Sha'ar Hagai location was targeted again Saturday night with a stun grenade.

The Friday fire at Sha'ar Hagai was extinguished by fire crews before it caused any damage. As it appears, the arsonists returned Saturday for another round of damage.

The two other Bat Haikar restaurants sustained heavier damage in the original attempt by the arsonists."

Mexico arrests gang figure in slaying of U.S. worker: "Jesús Ernesto Chávez, said to be a leader of a binational gang that supplies contract killers to the Juarez drug cartel, was arrested on charges that he masterminded the March 13 daylight ambush and murder of U.S. Consulate staffer Lesley Ann Enriquez and her husband, Arthur Redelfs, an El Paso sheriff's deputy.
Enriquez, who was four months pregnant, and Redelfs were killed by a squad of commandos as they were leaving a birthday party. The attack occurred within sight of the international bridge, and their deaths raised fears that U.S. officials were being targeted by warring drug traffickers. The couple's uninjured 7-month-old daughter was found crying in the back seat of their car.
Chávez told police that Enriquez was targeted because she was providing visas to members of the rival Sinaloa drug cartel, the chief of the federal police anti-drug unit, Ramón Pequeño, said at a news conference."

CTV Montreal - Shooting linked to rising mafia turf war: police - CTV News: "Montreal police say Tuesday's double shooting, which killed Agostino Cuntrera, 66, a reputed member of the Rizzuto clan, is linked to a turf war between two mafia families.
Cuntrera was gunned down yesterday around 4 p.m. outside his business in St. Leonard. He died at the scene.
His bodyguard, who was with Cuntrera, was also shot and died later in hospital.
People working in the area said they heard gunshots and droppped to the ground to avoid any crossfire.

Investigators eventually questioned two people in connection with the vehicle, but they were released.
Some experts believe the incident is related to the Calabrian clan, a rival family of the Sicilians.
